NOMAD mobile research laboratory

NOMAD is being developed as a mobile research laboratory for building diagnostics, environmental monitoring and sample preparation during fieldwork in rural, northern and on-reserve communities. The custom trailer will provide stable power and a controlled workspace where conventional laboratory access is limited.
Project overview
A field laboratory
The trailer is designed for multi-day work without dependable power or indoor workspace. Its battery, solar and generator systems, heating, cooling and humidity control, water, sample refrigeration and secure storage will create stable conditions for instruments and field samples.
On-site measurements
A portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer will measure metals and other inorganic constituents in soil, dust, building materials and water-borne particles. A separate monitoring system will measure airborne particles, gaseous pollutants and weather conditions. Together with the lab’s existing diagnostic equipment, these instruments will support research on housing performance, pollutant movement and exposure during heat, cold and wildfire-smoke events.
Working in community settings
NOMAD is also designed as a small workspace for interviews, training and collaborative field activities with residents and housing providers. Its first field use is expected in late 2027 or early 2028.
